Ultrasonic Testing (UT) NDT Training Courses

What is Ultrasonic Testing (UT)?

Ultrasonic Testing methods of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) use beams of mechanical waves (vibrations) of short wavelength and high-frequency, transmitted from a small probe and detected by the same or other probes. Such mechanical waves can travel large distances in fine-grain metal, in the form of a divergent wave with progressive attenuation.

The Ultrasonic Testing technique detects internal, hidden discontinuities that may be deep below the surface. Transducers and coupling wedges are available to generate waves of several types, including longitudinal, shear and surface waves. UT NDT applications range from thickness measurements of thin steel plate to internal testing of large turbine rotors.

Ultrasonic Testing techniques are widely accepted for quality control and materials testing in many industries, including power generation, production of steel, aluminium and titanium, fabrication, aerospace and marine.

Courses available

IMechE Argyll Ruane offer a comprehensive range of standard and advanced Ultrasonic Testing NDT training courses in Levels 1, 2 and 3 in a range of central and employer specific internationally recognised standards such as PCN (BS EN ISO 9712), SNT-TC-1A, EN4179 and NAS410.

Courses are available in all the major sectors such as Welds, Castings, Forgings/Wrought Products, Thickness and Laminations, Nozzle & Node and Critical Defect Sizing. Our standard UT courses are available at any time to suit the student's own requirements.

Advanced methods such as Ultrasonic Phased Array (PAUT), Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) and Auto UT are also delivered frequently throughout the year.

We are also able to offer refresher training to those students that are looking to re-certify, providing training on any theory or practical areas that may need to be revisited before sitting their examination.

Courses are delivered at the Engineering Training Centre in Sheffield, UK but can also be completed on-site at an organisation's premises or third party location depending on each individual circumstance.
