Special note

Candidates attempting a PCN examination must meet the PCN/GEN requirements. If attempting an ASNT/EN4179/NAS410 examination the requirements of your company’s written practice must be met. This course is not suitable for BGAS-CSWIP examination preperation.

  • Basic concepts
  • Ultrasound
  • Principals of ultrasonic testing
  • Flaw detector (operation and use)
  • Defect location and sizing techniques
  • Use of calibration and reference blocks
  • Plotting systems
  • Examination of samples, welds, castings and wrought products
  • Report writing and discussion of relevant standards and specifications (BS, EN etc)

Full PCN certification is only achieved once the required experience is acquired following the completion of the required training hours and passing of the examination:

Ultrasonic Testing (per sector – Welds, Castings, Wrought Products/Forgings*)
Level 1 – 40 training hours and 3 months experience
Level 2 – 80 training hours and 9 months experience
Level 3 – 40 training hours (+80 hrs for Level 3 Basic) and 36 months experience

*Students are able to complete an additional 4 days training and 1 day examination for additional UT sectors e.g. if you hold welds and wish to add castings.

Ultrasonic Nozzle & Node
Level 2 – Recommended 32 training hours & requires at least 1 Ultrasonic Testing Level 2 Welds certification

Ultrasonic Thickness & Laminations

Level 2 – 40 training hours and 4 months experience

Ultrasonic Critical Defect Sizing
Recommended 24 training hours and must have held a UT qualification in at least 2 groups for a minimum of 6 months.

Direct to Level 2 options are available, in this instance, students would be required to complete both Level 1 and 2 training and experience requirements.
