Level 3 NDT success for global aerospace facility

Consultant: Bryan Ravenshear

Chromalloy is a global technology company that provides
OEM and MRO services for commercial airlines, military application, as well as supporting the oil and gas, and power generation industries.

The Challenge

Based in Mexicali, Mexico, they operate an internal EN4179/NAS410 certification scheme for its NDT operators covering MT, PT, UT & RT. With additional sites located in 11 different countries, all of which contribute towards making them a $1B company.

As an Aerospace MRO facility, EASA had mandated following a recent audit, the need for the level 3 to be EN4179/NAS410 qualified through a European NDT Board in at least one method.

The Solution

Bryan was initially contacted, and the enquiry process commenced. After reviewing the company’s written practice, along with the proposed candidates’ personnel folder, it was agreed to deliver a level of training in preparation for EN4179/NAS410 Level 3 PT examinations.

A level of caution was built into the training plan due to not knowing the full depth of technical knowledge held by the candidate, or possible language barriers. Fortunately for Bryan, the candidate was very well prepared and held an in-depth knowledge of penetrant testing. This allowed Bryan to set the examinations well in advance of the schedule and although this wasn’t on the original scope allowed for a level 2 practical examination to be taken by the candidate.

The Results

The candidate was successful in all examinations and their feedback was extremely positive regarding the training and examination process.

During the visit, Bryan and the future level 3 also reviewed the current NDT setup at this facility and procedures for a sister company within Mexico. A level of ‘best practice’ was discussed, along with some opportunities for improvement identified within the procedures. Another service outside the scope of the visit, that will support the development and capability of the up and coming Level 3. This resulted in the client being extremely satisfied customer and we look forward to future work within Mexico.
