Case Study – Cosworth

Cosworth is a world leader with a prestigious reputation built on over five decades of excellence, innovation and collaboration.

The group delivers high performance technologies to a diverse range of industries using its capabilities in mechanical and electronic engineering and precision manufacturing.

Cosworth has over 50 years of experience in the design and manufacture or high-performance engines and related products and components.

Because Cosworth projects are all about leading edge and high-performance solutions, their manufacturing capability is focused on meeting very challenging requirements.

The Challenge

Cosworth approached our Level 3 Services team at Argyll Ruane as they wished to bring in-house their NDT for a new agreement to manufacture piston forgings for a major aerospace client in the United States. Craig was appointed as Cosworth’s consultant due to his extensive knowledge of Penetrant Testing, which was particularly relevant to the piston forgings manufactured by Cosworth.

Craig was required to assess and advise Cosworth’s NDT department on the processes and infrastructure needed to meet their clients requirements.

The Solution

Craig set about arranging the appropriate training and examinations in order to bring personnel up to the correct level of certification.

Craig was also on hand to advise on the layout of the department, which equipment was to be used, writing procedures and data cards, with all activities being customised to the requirements of Cosworth’s client.

The close working relationship forged with the head of Cosworth’s NDT department ensured that all work was done in a timely and cost effective manner.

The Results

Once the solution had been implemented Cosworth’s client sent across their own Level 3 specialists to assess Cosworth’s capability to carry out the work. The client was very happy with the result and provided their approval. This ensured that work could continue to fill the order.

By coming to IMechE Argyll Ruane to help them bring NDT activities in-house, Cosworth were able to save on costs from ceasing the use of contractors and also have greater control over their production process.

It also allows the organisation to have greater scope when taking on future work and developing the NDT department.

Craig continues to provide Level 3 Services to Cosworth, ensuring that they continue to be at the leading edge of manufacturing.
